ABC’s Jake Tapper Stumps Press Sec. Jay Carney on Debt Ceiling
It’s not often that Press Secretary Jay Carney gets stumped. He usually has a talking point or retort ready for anything. But when ABC‘s Jake Tapper went on the offensive with some very logical questions during Thursday’s press briefing, Carney didn’t really know how to handle it.
Essentially, Tapper asked which is worse: default now, or compromising with Republicans and passing an extension that would lead to another debt ceiling vote in a few months? The point Tapper seems to be making is, if default is as bad as the president is making it out to be, why not budge and come back to the debt ceiling issue later?
That seems like a good question, and no one but Tapper seems willing to ask it. Why? Well, look at how Carney responds (starting at about 10:30):
