This is the second time I have watched this very interesting and great debate. I saw things this time that I had missed the first time.
I thought Bobby did a great job. I am happy that Don Blanketship of Masey Coal agreed to have this very educating and interesting debate. I liked the way that Bobby at the end went and offered Don his hand. That to me is a very honorable act to after the debate shake each other’s hand.
One thing I noticed too is that even though they were opposed to each other that they each handled themselves in a mature manner. They didn’t go into to the debate to just insult each other as I have seen in trying to debate White Nationalists. Maybe Progressives too instead of treating each other with respect just attack the other guy? Maybe both sides do not really talk to each other, but instead talk at each other? These brave men talked to each other and not at each other. That I would think would be a very important quality to have. I will try more to talk to the other person and not at the other person. They had a real discussion of the issues and not just personal attacks which really impressed me.
I think that Don doesn’t understand the true effects of Mountintop Removal Mining. He didn’t seem to care about that little boy who is so scared that he sleeps with his clothes on. Yes, maybe Don started out as a poor person who worked in the Mines as a teen; but has he lost touch with the people because he is no longer one of them? Has he forgotten the little guy? Yes, there have been accidents where those slurry dams burst. That little boy has a reason to be afraid and I think Don really didn’t understand the fears and concerns of the people who live in those communities effected by mountaintop removal mining.
I also think Don is an honest man, because he wouldn’t have agreed to this debate with Bobby. I think in his heart he belives that he is doing good for the comminity. I also think he has lost touch and needs to really see what Mountaintop Removal Mining does and why the Catholic Bishops consider it a sin.
My personal opinion is the Bobby won the debate.
I have read some of the comments on the video that people have written. I would say that most of them give the victory to Bobby.
I just don’t think Don is aware in his own mind of what evil he is causing by his Mountiantop Removal Mining. My hope is that he will think about things and make an effort to find out the truth about Mountaintop Removal Mining and stop it on his own accord because he realizes that his actions are not good for substainable communities.
Here is one comment I liked:
“Those who sacrifice our beautiful mountains for security have niether.”
Mountaintop Removal is destroying one of America’s natural treasures. It is destroying one of America’s oldest cultures. These mountain people were there and fought in the American Revolution. They have always answered the call when needed. I believe we must fight Mountaintop Removal Mining because as the Catholic Bishops have said it is a sin. Those Bishops live there and see firsthand what is happening there.
