Sundance Founder Robert Redford on His Life, His Activism and the Importance of Independent Films

Democracy Now! broadcasts from Park City, Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival, the nation’s largest festival for independent cinema. Today, we spend the hour with Robert Redford. He’s well known as an actor, but part and parcel of who he is is an activist. He took his success and leveraged it to promote his real passions: environmental justice, Native American rights and independent filmmaking. Since 1980, through the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Institute, Robert Redford has helped independent voices develop their craft—in film, theater and music—and reach new audiences. Redford joins us for a wide-ranging interview about these many roles in his life, on and off screen.

    My dearest Mr. Redford,
I live in Dallas, Texas. I am 57 years old. I have admired you in your movies, and especially your Activism in your work on Independence Films. I have the opportunity to go to the Sundance Film Festival many times.
Today I watched in full, “The Last Castle”. I thought I had watched and seen in person every film you have ever been in. The movie, was incredible.

I had a house in Park City, Utah for 9 years. I have been to Sundance many times over. In the Summer and Winter. Just beautiful.

My son Hunter who is 28 worked the Winter Olympics the whole time and also knew I admired you very much. He got on a ski lift and you were on it. You both had a conversation, very pleasant. I asked him if you had your famous red bandana on? He said, yes. I couldn’t believe he was not the gentleman he is to think of his beautiful Mom if he could have your Bandana and give it to his MOM.

I am so proud of your work in every aspect.
I haven’t back to Park City for 4 years and one day I will come back to your place. Your Spa is fantastic. The atmosphere is a dream.
The Sundance Catalog is a something I look forward to receive. I keep them to share with my friends. I have too many things from that catalog.
    I get compliments always.

Thank you for giving me such happiness.

    Jerilynn,

Thank you for your very nice comment. I too like Robert Redford. I think there is a whole generation of us who think he is a dreamboat. I will always remember Barefoot in the Park as I just love that movie.
