Barbecued Sage Spareribs
6 pounds country-style pork spareribs
1 medium onion, chopped
2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons mixed pickling spices
1 tablespoon minced fresh sage or 1 teaspoon rubbed sage
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
3 cups barbecue sauce
Place ribs in a Dutch oven and cover with water. Add onion, garlic, pickling spices, sage and hot pepper sauce. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 1-1/2 hours or until tender.
Cool slightly; rinse ribs with water to remove spices. Reserve 1/2 cup barbecue sauce. Pour remaining sauce into a large resealable plastic bag. Add ribs; cover and refrigerate overnight. Cover and refrigerate reserved barbecue sauce.
Drain and discard marinade. Grill ribs, uncovered, over medium heat, turning several times until heated through, about 10 minutes, basting frequently with remaining sauce.
Yield: 6 servings.
Hmmm……….. we are big on barbeque as you yanks call it, sunday we had 27C sunny day.
I’m just wondering whats with all the recipes?
Well today we had civil unrest agian, the police used teargas and rubberbullets to disperse the crowds. The reason for the protest poor municipal service delivery, streets trashed, cars torched and people trying to do a days work beaten in the streets by protesters. The ironyof it all, it didn’t even make the daily news! Hows that for desensitization. Just another day.
I like cooking. I used to post a lot of recipes that I like, because I know other people are interested. I got out of doing that and thought I would start doing it again. I really love to cook and share recipes.
I don’t mind being called a yank because I used to live in MA and I am a yank. Though I know people down South who would get mad at you for daring to call a proud Southern man or woman a yank. It goes back to the Civil War. They are quite proud of their heritiage.
I am sorry that you had civil unrest. Where do you live. I am making a guess and making assumptions is not the best thing to do, but I am guessing South Africa? I have never been there but many years ago I did an exchange with a family in Rio, Brazil. I stayed with them for a week or so and their son stayed with us in the States for a week. He was talking about dating a girl who lived in South Africa and how nice it was. This was back in 1984. I often wonder if he moved there as he wanted to get out of Brazil.
Have you decided where you are going to move to? You might like coming to the states. Or you might even like going to the UK.
When I think of South Africa I think of an old surfing movie I saw and how nice the beaches are there.
I can’t say I have had a day of Civil Unrest here in AZ just thunder boomers last night and here many times we have the dry storms which are really neat and powerful.
I didn’t realize yank had different meaning. South Africa indeed, 35 years now but I will return to UK the country of my birth. Although I’m open to most countries, I tried Canada bit I’m too white. Realy I did apply for residency, I am looking at New Zealand and Australia too. As for the US I doubt I would be accepted although my dad is american believe it or not!
South Africa sure has changed politics aside, the crime levels are unimaginable, 15000 child murders last years, a rape every 20 seconds I think. So yes I’m leaving to secure my family, affirmative action is already putting the average man out of work and the school levels are dropping, 66% of children id grade 3 (8 years old) can’t read or count or write to the minimum required level.
Enough complaining.
Garfield,
I wish you the best. I hope that you will be happy in whatever country you move too. New Zealand is really nice from what I hear. My sister lives in Hawaii and loves it there.
I have always wanted to visit South Africa and Kenya. Victoria Falls is supposed to be beautiful and from the old surfing movie I was telling you about talked about how great South Africa was and the great beaches.
I guess crime is up everywhere and the quality of education is down everywhere. There was a time in America that people didn’t lock their doors during the day, and now they are locked all the time.
“As for the US I doubt I would be accepted although my dad is american believe it or not!”
If your father was born in America, you can apply for American citizenship.
I heard there are strict regulations regarding Us citizenship. My dad is american, but I haven’t a clue how to proceed with any enquiry. Hmm…… the USA maybe worth doing some research.
Thanx.
Garfield,
I would look into it. It is my understanding that if one has a parent who is American and you have the proof such as a birth certificate and he didn’t renounce his citizenship then you might be allowed to come here.
I know in the UK that my dad who was born in Lynn, MA because his dad was born in Scotland was helped when he was working in a foreign country and their was a coup in that country and they seized all the assets of that company and put my dad under house arrest and the American embassy was useless and wouldn’t lift a finger to get him out an American, but the British Embassy considered him one of their own and saved his life. I was 14 at the time and their were months I didn’t know if my dad was alive or dead because we didn’t hear from him. I remember telling him once he got back to the states that it was better to be a British subject than American if you are in a foreign country and need help. Maybe that is one reason I don’t really trust our government, I haven’t forgotten how they treat Americans overseas that need their help and their cold hearted go to hell attitude. My dad would have been killed and his own country of birth would have stood buy and done nothing. HE was very lucky that the British government considered him one of their own and got him out of the country.
I know I had thought of moving to Scotland at one time but because it was my grandfather I didn’t count and I wouldn’t be allowed to work there once I got there.
I would encourage you to look into it.
If you go back to the UK, would you consider Scotland?
I would love to live in Scotalnd, I was there when I was young and I have very fond memories of the country side. From my WN perspective it is far better than West and central UK, but I understand the north east is ok.
I dream of going to both Scotland and Ireland. I would love to spend time researching my family line. I would love to expand on the McDonald line and the Burns line. My dad’s cousin told me I also have Irish in me so I would like to research the Irish line.
I have one friend who talks about moving back to Ireland and I dream of going to the Isles myself.
