Help Us Save the Endangered Species Act
Dear Christine,
Time is running out!
Don’t let President Bush weaken the Endangered Species Act
Speak up and write Secretary Kempthorne today!
Have you heard that the Bush administration wants to severely weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA)? We know this law is as important to you as it is to us; that’s why we need your help to make sure this doesn’t happen!
Currently, all Federal agencies must subject any plans that would potentially affect endangered animals and plants to an independent review by the Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Service.
So, what would President Bush’s proposed rules mean? They would allow projects, such as dam and highway construction, to proceed as long as the agency in charge decides they would not harm vulnerable species.
It sounds to me like President Bush wants to leave the fox to guard the hen house!
We have an opportunity to fight these changes – but time is running out. The comment period for these new rules ends September 15th!
Please take a moment to speak out against Bush’s assault on the Endangered Species Act – click here to take action now.
For more than 30 years, the ESA has been a safety net for plants and animals on the brink of extinction, including grizzly bears, bald eagles, and gray whales. Yet President Bush wants to gut these protections, despite ESA’s overwhelming success.
Consider this: a report by biologists at the National Marine Fisheries Service found that three EPA-approved pesticides are causing serious harm to endangered stocks of west coast salmon. This review was triggered under the very section of the Endangered Species Act that the Bush administration is now hoping to undo.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – one of the agencies in charge of implementing the Bush plan – will accept public comments on the ESA changes until September 15.
Take a minute right now to tell Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne, that you oppose Bush’s plan to gut the ESA.
Animals on the brink of extinction need consideration and protection. To ensure the future of our most vulnerable species, we should continue the requirement for independent scientific review and abandon these proposed changes.
We successfully defended the ESA the last time the Bush administration tried to undermine it, and with your help, we will do it again.
Thank you for your continued support.
